How I see the video:

I see this video as being very weird and eccentric therefore there will be a lot of Green Screen use and some possible editing choices such as including comic book elements like "POW" or "BANG". They will be doing weird things including leap frogging across the studio, doing odd dance moves and being put in manny different uncommon costumes. It will have psychedelic elements as well as very obscure costumes and moments.

The band will look like a typical nerdy indie band. In the shots where they are playing their instruments they will be wearing shirts with short sleeves with a straight tie, or overalls, or a jacket, or a hat. Seeing as though there will be 4 members each with a different instrument they will all have similar costumes with a different element to show individuality.

There will not be a specific narrative in this music video as it is more of a fun and comical music video where weird things are happening. Most of these things will happen in the studio however, I thought that having a funny sequence of events happening in a supermarket would enhance the comical aspects along with people wanting to watch the video out of interest as to what will happen next.

I think this video will work very well with the song as it is just as quirky as it sounds. It will also have some literal elements in which the song says "Lets pretend we don't exist" I was thinking of having the instrumentalists disappear as the instruments keep playing. We will be able to achieve this through using strings to hold up the instruments, hopefully making it seem real, and mastering the editing techniques to increase its realness.

How I see the video:
There is a dart board with several different images with a girl and a boy, these show the different memories that they have had together. The music video will consist of these images becoming real life as the song progresses. There can also be added metaphorical objects that connect to the song i.e "I know ill never be the apple of your eye" they could be in an apple tree garden. For the chorus "she loves me, she loves me not..." there will be an iconic flower and the main singer will be pulling out the petals as seen in many iconic films. We will be following a love story where they fall in love. Some different scenarios that will be included in the music video:

The artist will have to have a chill look, someone who is into reggae and wears ripped jeans and has somewhat long hair. They portray a very chill lifestyle, the stereotypical stoner who either surfboards or skateboards. This artist would be similar to Donavon Frankenreiter but a younger version.

The video fits in perfectly with the song as it is a as it portrays all the elements of love as it is a love song and it will keep the audience interested. It also portrays the brand image perfectly as the artist is being portrayed as a loving and free spirited guy, which is his brand image.

My group and I made a literal video as a project following from leaning about Goodwin and his theory about how far the music video relates to the lyrics. 

This helped us learn about lyrics and video relationships. We analyzed different videos and saw how certain videos don't literally relate to the lyrics. We looked at Miley Cyrus' We Can't Stop video to make a literal video out of, we chose this video because it is easy to make fun of and there is an easy melody that we can sing to and find lyrics to work to. 

I also learnt about how to edit the video. I learnt how to detach the audio from the actual video and then sync in the re recorded version as well as the karaoke version of it. I was taught how to rip the video and subtitle it properly so that the words synched in with the singing.

This was also good to learn how to organize a team and make a successful and effective production line so that everyone in the group is working and contributing to the project. This was not successful the whole time as I found mostly two people working while the 3 others watched on. However I have learnt how to work with others and use organization and communication to have a successful working team. 

As an example, before we began making literal videos we were shown a literal video of Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler which allowed to see how literal videos worked and what was most effective.

In preparation for the lip sync exercise we learnt the lyrics of the 30 second part of "Shake it off" by Taylor Swift. Here is a clip with the amount of music used as well as the actual music video. I watched the video several times and looked for different elements we could incorporate in our video that would adhere to the stereotypical pop videos. I found that there was a very fun and jokey environment in which the actors had fun and were playful. I also decided to get a fake microphone to identify the singer, and a hula necklace for fun.

In the studio we worked with 3 different sets that allowed our video to have more variety. We had a volcanic background that created a different setting as well as showing the use of tracking shots to show all the characters in the sequence. Another group managed to do this very well and it can be seen through this gif of their version of Taylor Swift's "Shake it Off"

Then we worked at the couch where we played out different scenarios and used different closeups of feet as the camera we used for that was a camera that did not have a zoom which meant that we needed to measure the length at which the camera was filming to make the focus accurate. We also used the couch to have a short sequence that shows us having a dilemma and then dancing instead. This can be seen in the second edited cut off our video.

 

Finally we worked on the green screen where we were able to have wider shots along with more active and shots that allow us to run across the camera. Then in editing if we had more time we would be able to add more effects to the background to make it look as if we are in a different place or setting.

 

I learnt about how to make use of a tracking shot and how to focus close ups on the camera that we used. I also learnt that it is very important to sing or have the same energy as the song or else its obvious that you are lip syncing and it kills the effect of having a music video with the artist singing the song.

In the suite we worked on cutting on different points in the song to have a variety of shot lengths and editing techniques, for example we cut on the bass drum as well on several snares and at points different parts of the lyrics that illustrated the lyrics.

During editing I learnt that it makes it more visually interesting to cut the shots at different points as well as changing up the angles and shots so if we have included a close up it should be followed by a wide shot that might be a bit longer. 

Some mistakes we made was that we took too long to choose our shots and we were very picky with the editing process which meant that we were not able to finish the editing as effectively as we would have liked, however we managed to finish it. Another mistake that we made was not focusing every shot and we had to not include a certain shot that was part of idea due to the fact that it was out of focus and it would have made the whole video low quality which was not the idea of the exercise. 

 

Andrew Goodwin explains that music videos are different to films as they break the 4th wall and talk to the camera/audience. Music videos are also in the same structure as a song therefore, there can be repeated shots to emphasize the chorus and people may or may not play different kinds of characters, i.e. the singer could be narrating as well as being a character in the video. Another aspect that Goodwin talks about is that music video narratives can be incomplete, unlike films, this is done to encourage people to watch the video again to understand the meaning of the ending or the entire video itself.

Goodwin argues that there are three different types of relationships between music videos and lyrics of their songs. These three being, illustration, amplification and disjuncture.

Illustration means the video literally shows what the lyrics are saying for example in Madonna's Music Video of 'Papa Don't Preach' where the video literally illustrates her relationship with her father which is explained in the lyrics as well as the video.

Dancing is often used to express the feelings/moods in the song

Amplification is where the music video intensifies the lyrics. There is a sort of link between the lyrics and the video however it can be a deeper meaning or can add a new meaning to the song. This can be seen in Basement Jaxx's Wheres Your Head At? as it has an overall meaning about insanity, disorientation and entrapment.

Metaphorical entrapment

Disjuncture means that the narrative from the music video has no relation at all to the lyrics or meaning to the song, this is seen in Groove Armada's Superstylin as the song is about having fun at parties and getting the crowd pumped, overall about a crazy party and the music video shows aliens coing to earth and discovering ordinary things that has nothing to do with the lyrics of the play.

I made this website on Wordpress.com and I made it on my favourite band the 1975. I looked at different websites that were made for bands of the same genre as the 1975 to find the conventions of a website for an Indie Rock Band. I found that the most common website home page was a large image of either the album cover or the band, this can be seen on websites such as Death Cab for Cutie, Arcade Fire and The Black Keys.

This why I decided to include my main heading as a picture of the band with their band name at the top. I also found that many of the websites have their logo in top left hand corner of the site, such as the original 1975 website, the Arctic Monkeys and Franz Ferdinand

however when I attempted to include a logo by going into My Site, then down to Themes and Logo, it looked out of place and odd. However this may be a useful tool for when I build my official website. I then began to make pages for my website, as many of the other pages I visited had options such as About, Tour, Music etc. These included Oasis, Blur and The Strokes.

By making a page I went onto the My Site section, scrolled down and found pages. I then added media by clicking the Add Media button and inserted text in the space provided. By making a page the viewer is then able to access that page on the pages bar. It is important not to make a blog post, as it will not become a page that your viewer can access but more of a short post that will appear on your homepage. This is done by going on the My Site section and scrolling down to blog posts, there you can insert text and media to make a short post about the band.
